Sector report: transport
While aviation is struggling to maintain profitability, investment in rail is helping to offset accounting concerns, says Jaimie Kaffash
It is understating things to say transport is big business. As a sector that has relatively recently been put into the private sector, it has several levels of importance for the UK: as well as benefits from mass employment and corporation tax, it pays billions in extra duties and for procuring licences directly from the government.
